Deviant Nightmares

Well, the story part of the Deviant Nightmares contest is complete. But it doesn't look like too many people are submitting art. I can't really allow things to get too far behind, so if we don't get enough images, you guys will have just forfeited your chance at the exposure this contest would have given you. I'll either forge ahead with the book with no interior illustrations and only do a vote on the covers, or do a bunch of illustrations for the interior myself. Gotta keep moving or this thing will never get finished. You can check out the winners of the writing half of the contest by dropping by :icondeviant-nightmares: and checking the journal or the gallery to see all of the winning stories.

From the journal of Joseph Sweet

Merry Christmas Dark Artist's....
This was just posted this morning. I was shocked at the THREAT.

We were given a deadline of one month, now I know we can take a picture and do manipulations in just a few day's, but thats not the fucking point. We were directed to do our part during the biggest holiday celebrated on earth. So we loose two maybe three weeks for some folks. Sure we can do it in a week but again its the point. It's the threat being posted on Christmas eve.....

The writers were given months to create. I have spent hours fighting with da staff and advertising this project. I did it because I believed in the cause. I did it despite the warning we received. I truly am so disappointed in this latest development I could puke. :puke:

This whole fucking thing sucks.
I am sorry I have gotten you all involved in this.
Another kick in the fucking fun bag, he created a fucking group, manned it with a person who is not involved with the project and she just used his group to advertise the contests at her group.
And for me, for all my hard work, for all my long hours and pissing off GM's and $ signs, I get invited to be a member.WTF?

The admins here as well have suffered and for what. We receive say between 50 and 70 pieces of art not related to the DSF project a week only to turn them down, because our folder is open to the community. Again I am sorry ladies to have put you through this.

I even had to beg for info from him to do updates about his book.
Though some talked for hours I was told by one of my admins.
Skype this and email that....I don't think it was ever about the art at all.

Joe has just driven a huge wedge between authors and artist's.

What a fucking douche bag!

Here's the link to the spec's if you want to create something for this ego maniac.
da-morgue.deviantart.com/journ…

As far as I go, I wash my hands. I stayed with it this long because I gave my word as a man and I have kept it.

My conscience is clear.

MERRY FUCKING CHRISTMAS from upper state New York :fork:

Quotes from Joe:

"The literature was priority... of course it was.. of course the art was secondary. It is, after all, a book... with stories in it. You know... the kind you read. The illustrations are just icing on the cake, but they aren't necessary."

"I don't really celebrate Christmas. So it means nothing to me. It's a holiday full of traditions built from many religions and cultures and most of it has nothing to do with Christ. He wasn't even born in December from what scholars have now calculated. So I really wish people would stop bringing that into it."

These are a few quotes I wanted to post from the original journal. It has been deleted because he just ranted and gave everyone a hard time because he fucked up. What he did and said shows he has no compassion for anyone else's belief's but his.

He has gone as far as going to our members paging and harassing them. I have had to block all three of his accts plus two that he created to gain access back in to the group. If he was not in the wrong why has he spent three days defending him self?

I apologize again for miss quoting this. Josey Didn't say this its a misquote.

"This fuck stick is lookin for a real time ass kicking"

MY bad, sometimes be human has its draw back.

Deviant Nightmares

This project is open to the Entire DeviantART Community. You do not need to be a member of any of our group to contribute. If you are not watching this blog and plan on contributing, you might want to add us to your watch list.....
The book will be going world wide and you will be seen by many.

:new:  This will be an adult book containing adult stories and installations.

josephsweet will be asking for age verification if your art work is chosen.

If you want to create something that will go with a story you can find them all in one place:

:icondeviant-nightmares:

Our deadline to complete the art for the book is only one month,

so all entries are due shortly after the holidays.

January 15th

IS THE DEADLINE FOR THE ART.

Writers take longer that us visual artists that why they got more time. We should have no problem creating our art in the time allowed. This will allow the release date of the book to be around April or May.

You must following the criteria listed below for the artwork.
REMEMBER to put in your comments that your art is for the DSF PROJECT. This is very important.

COVER AND ILLUSTRATION GUIDELINES

:bulletblue: For the book cover 300 dpi is important.  You need to submit a 5x8 inch full color print.

:bulletblue: An offline version with layers should be saved so that any text can be altered or moved later if something needs to be changed.

:bulletblue:  No signatures or water markers please unless you have saved a file that can be altered.

:bulletblue: Remember to keep important text and anything you don't want cut about a quarter inch from the edges.

:bulletblue: You may add the title of the book, if you want to incorporate it in with the design.

:bulletblue: For interior prints GREY SCALE (only) ,  300dpi, and between 4x6 to 5x8 is preferred.

:bulletblue: We want only GREY SCALE art for the interior prints this will help keep costs down...

:bulletblue: Please be sure to add to your artists comments that your art is for the "DSF PROJECT"

:bulletblue: Make sure to submit your art to the DSF project FOLDER, or it will get lost.

:bulletblue: Illustrations are open to all medium where copyright issues will not be a problem.

:bulletblue: No permanent due date is set as of yet for the illustrations.

SUBMIT ART to this folder.  :painter: Deviant Short Fiction Art Project

You might want to check any art you have submitted for the book to make sure it is there and that it follows the format we need to use. GREY SCALE ONLY for the interior, 300 dpi, and check your cover pieces as well.

UNRESTRICTED STOCK

We have included a list of unrestricted stock providers below so you need to check those out. we will provide a credit page in the book and that is all that most of the stocker require. ALWAYS let them know their stock is being used in a book project. Courtesy goes a long way.

:iconunrestricted-stock: a very nicely run stock group.

Unrestricted stock list compiled by Lawrence De Dark. lawrencededark.deviantart.com/…

:iconfree-stocks: another group.

Below are members that may not be listed with these resources but have graciously given you the thumbs up.

:iconmysticmorning: :iconda-joint-stock: :iconpullingcandy: :iconnitch-stock: :iconvariety-stock: :iconzememz: :iconashensorrow: :iconjaded-ink: :icondoomsday-stock: :icondamselstock: :iconwyldangel-stock: :iconcarro-stalk: :iconlittlewhitewitch: :iconkrissybdesignsstock: :iconlunanyxstock: :iconjagged-eye: :iconmjranum-stock:

*Note I have noticed in the last several years of using stock that most providers are very happy if you just let them know your intentions. There are very few had asses that want you to pay for something they give away free. If you ask 99.9% of the time there is no problem. Stockers are like everyone else, they just want their effort recognized. So don't ever be intimidated to ask a question of these fine artists.

CONCERNING CREDITS

Manipulator's may be asked to provided written proof of consent from the stock providers.
You will credit them in your deviations and we will include their names on the credit page.

We will be posting a list of stock providers that allow commercial usage with their art.

We are having something right after the copyright page, where the names of stories and illustrations and author/artists names will be listed. On that page, would be something listing a single website where all the authors and artists for each volume of this book can be listed with bios and links to other works of theirs and links back to their pages here on DA and other websites.

We will work with you on creating those personal pages once we have a definitive listing of stories.

IN CLOSING

*** Remember if you don't get accepted, it doesn't mean you don't have talent. We can only accept so many stories and art.  If all goes well, we may be able to do a book every year. There's always the next one.

Best of luck everyone.
Everyone of us at The DArk Empire are so proud we were chosen to help with this project.

It would make us very happy if some of you became published artist's.

I know most of you want to know the big question's.

1. Are we being paid?  NO, but we are giving you a chance to be a published artist!

(You can make a few $ by distributing the book locally)

2. What is this going to cost us?  Nothing but your time and skills.

Simply publishing is free, but making the wholesale cost of the book cheap enough to be able to get it  into distribution channels for libraries and book stores is around 40 bucks initially and 5 bucks a year to keep it in there. The book will be available through Amazon.com U.S. UK and some others, and just about everywhere that sells books online after a month or so. If we keep the page count at around 200 pages, the wholesale cost may be as low as $2.99 or $2.50. Tack on a couple of dollars and some change for the minimum to do distribution, because those companies get a cut and another dollar for the print company cuz they get a cut, and you'll have cover price. Around 6 bucks and some change is what we're shooting for to be competitive. And we don't get a cut so that keep the price down. Each of the authors will be able to buy wholesale copies, though and if they get them at 2.99 or so and sell them for 6 or even 9.99, they can make a profit selling them locally. We don't really want the end price to be anything over $9.99. $6.00 would be even better as it needs to be a competitive price so people will be more likely to take a chance on names they haven't heard of before and get all of you guys out there more. (plus the wholesale price will be less which means being able to buy more at once cheaper for selling locally.)

Promoting the book is going to be the trick. Promotion is always a concern and the fact that we are also promoting DeviantArt right on the cover we might get some help from them. Advertising is something that would severely help out this project. Paying for advertising in a social network or other place's would be where any donation would be used.

It's not at all your fault... It was not a cleared and net project... Not even a due time to do it for lot of us... Without even knowing the stories chosen inside... And without a good communication between the director and the group... "A good christmas gift..."

Anyway thanks to you and admins of dA-Morgue for your enthousiasm!

Maybe we'll do another project. Why not directly by dA-Morgue itself ?

Wishing a great holidays season to all members :)
